Each should be stocked with equipment appropriate for the tasks done in each, and prepared before use.

Personnel

First, check that all legal requirements are met before starting any procedure. Then all staff involved should be trained and competent in the procedure. The performance of surgical procedures requires a high level of manual skill that can only be acquired by extensive practice. In the UK practice is usually restricted to performing procedures on dead animals or simulators, such as the CurVet rat training siumulator (see www.learningcurvedevelopment.co.uk/training-materials/). Prepare by consulting text books or DVDs, observing and discussing with others, learning the relevant anatomy, practising on cadavers or simulators and then operating under direct supervision initially. Whenever possible, obtain practical instruction from someone who has undergone formal surgical training (a medically qualified or veterinary surgeon).

Liaise with support staff to make sure that they will be available, and it may be helpful to prepare a peri-operative plan in consultation with the animal technicians and veterinary surgeon, to include husbandry requirements, post-surgical welfare assessment and a protocol for analgesia. Do not attempt any surgical procedures on live animals, however minor, until you are properly prepared and confident of your ability to carry it out successfully.
